Today is the big day! The first day of USA Luge Screening camp! Stephanie was excited! They started with the basics. How to lie on the sled and how to turn. It’s not really something you can learn without just doing it. So after a brief Luge 101 course, and getting fitted for helmets and arm pads, they headed up to the track.
When heading up to the track, all the kids piled into a few box trucks with their sleds. Steph said that it was a fun bumpy ride to the top with the back door open.
Each kid got to do two runs on the first day. They started at Start #5, which is the lowest starting point. We asked the coaches how fast they were going and the coaches estimated around 40-45 MPH! When they start from the very top, the Luge athletes reach speeds over 90MPH! Here is a pic of the coarse map.
And here it is…what Stephanie (and all of us) has been waiting for…her first run on the ice!
She did a total of two runs on the first day. Here is the second run…
Words can not express how proud everyone is of Stephanie! She did an amazing job navigating the course…stayed off the walls…listened to her coaches…and executed what her coaches asked her to do! Stay tuned for Day #2!
